Marathon training plan
42.195 km doesn't forgive improvisation. A well-built marathon cycle takes 16 to 20 weeks, with disciplined volume progression and recovery taken seriously.
What to expect from the preparation
Typical duration
16 to 20 weeks
Weekly volume
45 to 90 km
Runs per week
4 to 6
Long run
26 to 32 km
How the week is organized
A plan isn't a list of runs: every workout has a role.
Long base
Many weeks of aerobic volume. In the marathon, base is what decides the last 10 km.
Progressive long runs
Growth of at most 2 km at a time, with down weeks every three or four weeks.
Marathon pace
Long blocks at target pace, which also train your nutrition and hydration strategy.
Three-week taper
Gradual volume reduction while keeping short race-pace stimuli.
Costly mistakes
- Running long runs beyond 32 km thinking it "guarantees" the race.
- Practicing nutrition only on race day.
- Ignoring signs of accumulated fatigue and persistent pain.
- Starting the race faster than the pace you trained.
Common questions
What's the longest long run in a marathon plan?
In most plans, between 30 and 32 km. Going beyond that raises injury risk without a proportional gain.
How many runs a week?
4 to 6, depending on your history. Consistency over months matters more than an isolated volume peak.
Can I train for a marathon as a beginner?
It's possible, but the responsible path goes through finishing a 10K and a half marathon first. The plan is built from your real starting point.
